EXcite

EXcite

This unit has been designed to fulfill the following Digital Technology content descriptors:

Plan, create and communicate ideas and information, including collaboratively online, applying agreed ethical, social and technical protocols (ACTDIP022)

and

Examine the main components of common digital systems and how they may connect together to form networks to transmit data (ACTDIK014).

An additional content descriptor from the Maths curriculum was also chosen:

Construct displays, including column graphs, dot plots and tables, appropriate for data type, with and without the use of digital technologies (ACMSP119)

As students progress through EXcite, they will refresh their prior knowledge with classmates, participate in formative assessment in the form of Study Ladder activities, before using an Excel booklet to instruct the students on how to make a graph with Microsoft Excel. Students will then participate in an assessment piece at the end of EXcite to assess the learning they achieved during the unit. This resource also contains lesson plans, a unit plan, assessment task sheet, a rubric and the Excel booklet required by students.

These resources can be used in a number of ways. Teachers can take the resources exactly as they are and use the whole kit in their lesson, teachers can take pieces of the resource and use some of it or teachers can use the resource as inspiration to create their own. Due to the step-by-step instructions used in the Excel booklet, students are able to work at a pace that is suitable for them. However, there will still be a need for teachers to differentiate for their learners. Some suggestions may be to allow small groups of students to work with a teacher when creating Excel documents and graphs, allowing assistance to be offered when appropriate or for the creation of the graphs to be done as a whole class, on an interactive whiteboard before allowing students to continue their booklets.

The Excel booklet has been written using a Mac computer, which is the computer system that I own. In order for this booklet to be used effectively within a school setting that runs on Windows, adjustments will need to be made to the booklet by the teacher. The booklet has been written and presented in a way that will allow this to be done easily.
